Recognizing the need for change and desperate to reclaim his life, Mike reached his breaking point. It was at this critical juncture that he made the courageous decision to seek help and enrolled in a comprehensive rehabilitation program. The path to recovery was never going to be easy, but Mike was determined to fight for his life and rebuild what addiction had stolen from him. Inspired by the support he received, Mike took an active role in his own recovery and within the LESC community. To support persons in recovery by improving their access to safe, stable residences with peer and community support. Our vision is adequate housing for all individuals in recovery from a substance use disorder.

Mike’s Story

Fluid therapy and antibiotics were discontinued six days after surgery. “I sat in numbed silence as Dr. Barrett laid out her plan,” Hillman said. “From what I got out of her briefing, without the support of the tendons that had ruptured, Kit’s pastern joint, which usually has a three-degree range of motion, now had a 20-degree bend in it, and it was only going to get worse. He was a heavy smoker, and so was my mom until she quit cold turkey. The men I went through the house with became like brothers to me. They showed me how to have fun and thrive in sobriety. I learned how to have healthy relationships, how to be a responsible adult, and how to be a man of integrity. I have been to other sober living programs, and Roots is truly one of a kind in the best way possible. I was so desperate to get sober I went to a 30-day rehab. I really felt like the 12-step program was a key part of my recovery.

Describing his initial state, Mike recalls, “I was still a stone-cold Mikes Recovery and Success Story addict.” However, with the support of his drug counselor, he actively engaged in treatment programs. “I did about two rehabs while I was there,” he shared.

This school year is my third year helping in the program! I feel as though this program gives my life purpose and is the most important thing I do in my life. I love working with the kids and being a part of what God is doing in their lives. I had grown up experimenting with drugs in my 20s and always dabbled with them, here and there.
